I.PRONUNCIATION OF -S/ES & -ED
1. How to pronounce “-s /-es”:
 • /s/ động từ hoặc danh từ tận cùng là “f, k, p, t, gh = f,  (th)” 
 Ex: books, maps, cats, roofs, laughs, eats, looks, cloths
 • /iz/ động từ hoặc danh từ tận cùng là “ces, ges, ses, xes, zes, ches, shes” 
 Ex: places, changes, classes, boxes, buzzes, churches, brushes
 • /z/ động từ hoặc danh từ tận cùng là các phụ âm cịn lại (b, d, m, n, l, r, v, g, ŋ , , y) & tất cả 
 nguyên âm 
 Ex: dogs, plays, sings, arrives, clothes
 Notes:
 - Khi *th phát âm là / θ / thì –s /–es mới phát âm là / s / như baths, 
 - Khi *th phát âm là / ð / thì –s /–es phát âm là / z / như cloths, clothes, bathes,
 - Khi *gh phát âm là / f / thì –s phát âm là / s / như laughs, coughs, . 
 - Khi *gh là âm câm thì –s phát âm là / z / như ploughs, 
2. How to pronounce “-ed”:
 • /id/ động từ tận cùng là t & d 
 Ex: wanted, needed, added
 • /t/ động từ tận cùng là k, p, s, f, ch, sh, θ 
 Ex: stuffed, looked, stopped, massed, boxed, brushed, watched
 • /d/ động từ tận cùng là các âm khác(b, m, n, l, r, v, g, z, ð ) & tất cả nguyên âm 
 Ex: played, carried, rubbed
 Notes:
 - Khi *th phát âm là / θ / thì –ed mới phát âm là / t / như breathed, 
 - Khi *th phát âm là / ð / thì –ed phát âm là / d / như bathed, 
 - Khi *gh phát âm là / f / thì –ed phát âm là / t / như laughed, coughed, . 
 - Khi *gh là âm câm thì –ed phát âm là / d / như ploughed, 
 - “-se” cuối từ thường được phát âm là / z / nên -ed được phát âm là / d/:
 - raise → raised /-zd/, refuse → refused /-zd/, cause → caused, advise → advised, use → used, 
 pleased, realised, praised, chased, ... 
 Một số tính từ sau cĩ cách phát âm của –ed là / id /: naked /’neikid/, wicked /‘wikid/

7. Dấu nhấn rơi vào âm tiết cách –ate, -ary 1 âm tiết: 
 - ate : in/vestigate, com/municate, /illustrate ,con/siderate, /fortunate ...
 - ary : /necessary, /dictionary, /literary, /military ...
*Ngoại lệ: docu/mentary, ele/mentary, supple/mentary, extra/ordinary.
8. Dấu nhấn nằm ngay trên các tiếp vĩ ngữ sau: -ee, -ese, -eer, -oo, -een, -esque, -ique, -ade, -*ain (chỉ 
 áp dụng với V) 
 - ee : de/gree, trainee, refe/ree... Ngoại lệ : com/mittee, /coffee
 - eer : ca/reer, volun/teer,mountai/ner, engi/neer... 
 - ese : Japa/nese, Vietna/mese,Chi/nese ... 
 - ain (chỉ áp dụng cho động từ) : re/main, con/tain, ob/tain, re/tain, enter/tain 
 - aire : questio/naire, millio/naire...
 - ique : tech/nique, an/tique... 
 - esque : pictu/resque... 
 - ade: lemo/nade 
 -oo, -ique: sham /poo, tech/nique
9. Dấu nhấn giữ nguyên khơng thay đổi nếu từ được thêm vào một một tiếp đầu ngữ , một 
 tiếp vĩ ngữ hoặc cả hai: re-, en-, im- , in-, ir-, over-, super- ; -or, -er, -ist, -ian, -hood, -ment, -
 able, -ous, -ly, -ship, 
 Ex: /Happy, un/happy, /happiness, un/happiness, po/lite, impo/lite, (im)po/liteness 
10. Trọng âm ở các từ ghép. 
 a. Hầu hết danh từ ghép và tính từ ghép cĩ trọng âm chính rơi vào âm tiết đầu tiên. 
 /dishwasher, /filmmaker, /typewriter, /praiseworthy, /waterproof, /lightning-fast 
 Ngoại lệ : duty-/free, snow -/white
 b. Tính từ ghép cĩ từ đầu tiên là tính từ hoặc trạng từ thì trọng âm chính rơi vào từ thứ 2, tận cùng 
 là động từ phân từ 2.
 well-/done, well-/informed, short-/sighted, bad-/tempered
 c. Các trạng từ và động từ ghép cĩ trọng âm chính rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2. up/stairs, down/stairs, down-
 /grade, ill-/treat,
