Diễn tả hành động đã từng lặp đi lặp lại trong quá Ví dụ 1:

 (Tơi đã từng nĩi tiếng Anh tốt.)

 (Nhưng bây giờ tơi khơng thể nĩi tốt như vậy nữa.) 
 Ví dụ 2: 
 Ben didn’t use to do exercise every morning. 
 (Ben đã từng khơng tập thể dục vào mỗi buổi sáng.) 
2. CÂU ƯỚC (WISHES) 
a. Câu ước ở tương lai (Wishes for the future) Ví dụ: 
Câu ước ở tương lai diễn tả mong ước một sự việc He wishes his neighbour would turn the music 
hoặc hành động cĩ thể sẽ xảy ra trong tương lai. down. (Anh ấy ước người hàng xĩm của mình sẽ 
 S + wish + S + would + V vặn nhỏ đài xuống.) 
b. Câu ước ở hiện tại (Wishes for the present) Ví dụ: 
* Câu ước ở hiện tại diễn tả mong ước một sự việc I wish I had a good brother like Jack’s. 
hoặc hành động xảy ra trái ngược với thực tế ở hiện (Tơi ước tơi cĩ một người anh trai tài giỏi như anh 
tại. trai của Jack.) 
 S + wish + S + Vpast simple 
* Khi người nĩi muốn thể hiện mong ước một sự Ví dụ: 
việc xảy ra trái ngược với sự việc đang diễn ra ngay I wish I was staying at home instead of going out
