A priest and ministrants, wearing black and violet robes take part in the first day of the funeral. • Before the burial, the coffin is taken at the church where the priest says the requiem and sprinkles the coffin with Holy water. • Then the bells toll and the mourners take the coffin to the cemetery, where they place it on the grave. • After the short speech and prayers by the priest, the loved ones of the dead say they last goodbye and cover the coffin with soil. It’s a very important festival for families, who usually come together for a long weekend - even if some of them have to travel long distance to get home. According to American tradition, the first Thanksgiving took place in 1621, soon after the first European settlers arrived in North America. The most common meal at Thanksgiving in the USA is roast turkey and vegetables. According to tradition, the person who gets the “wishbone” must break it and make a wish. Of course, you needn’t have turkey at Thanksgiving. Lobster and crab are also popular. Apart form the family meal, the Thanksgiving weekend is also a time for sport, parades and shopping. There are American football matches on TV. In New York, the department store Macy’s organises a famous fancy- dress parade which always ends with Santa Claus.
